The Gigli family became owners of the farm in 1994, taking it over from the Acciaierie di Piombino. With the purchase we immediately tried to take steps to modernize the cellar equipment and renovate the vineyards.
Investments to improve the company’s production capacity initially involved agricultural and oenological equipment. From 1999 until 2007 they turned mainly to new vineyards and olive groves; over the course of these years, approximately 1300 olive trees and 6 hectares of vineyards have been planted to replace what was present; the choice was to use “international” vines such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, which had already given excellent proof of themselves in our area, managing to express a typicality linked to the territory, but also to continue to turn to the Tuscan vine par excellence, the Sangiovese. An important part of the new vineyards have been reserved for a white grape variety, Vermentino, using both a classic Tuscan clone and a couple of Corsican clones. Finally, 15 years after the beginning of our ownership, a new cellar for aging was built in the Spring of 2009.
This way of managing our vines makes the grapes get matured later: in fact, in August, while producers who have pruned early have grapes already completely red and concentrating sugar, in our vines grapes are still green and just start to changing color and the concentration begin only in September, when the season is fresher, and run very slowly permitting also a good maturation of polyphenols and of tannins for a long lasting life’s wines . . After some years, when we focused ourselves most in replacing vineyards and trying to understand how to manage with the coltivation of the grape and the works in the cellar, now we’re trying to approach the international markets aware and confident in the quality of our wines (testified by great ratings in Italian Wine Guides and international magazines which constantly claimed our wines between the most valued ones in Tuscany). . .
Even if it’s a small winery, You saw that we produce several kind of wines: -Kalendamaia, 100% Vermentino; by different clones from Corsica and one very typical from Maremma. -L’Etrange, 100% Vermentino; by spontaneous fermentation and mantaining grapes into the wine for several months. -A rose is a rose, Rosato 100% Merlot; quite atypical rose wine since harvest’s time is in the second part of October. -Rubido – 100% Merlot -Libatio – 100% Sangiovese Grosso -Spirto – 100% Merlot -I Fiori Blu – 100% Cabernet S. These last four wines have a long ageing in French barriques which permit to refine the presence of the tannins and a long lasting life of them. .
